  • Poás Volcano is a 2,697 m (≈8,850 ft) tall active stratovolcano in central Costa Rica, located in Poás Volcano National Park in Alajuela Province. Wikipedia+2Costa Rica+2

  • It features one of the world’s largest volcanic craters: the main crater is approximately 1.3–1.5 km in diameter and around 300 m deep. Visit Costa Rica+1

  • The volcano remains active; recent years have seen eruptions, gas emissions and temporary closures of the park.

Why It’s Worth Visiting

  • The crater lake often displays striking colours (turquoise, green, sulphur-yellow) because of the sulphur-rich waters and volcanic gases.

  • The setting is dramatic: cloud forest, high altitude, sweeping views over the Central Valley, and easy access from San José/Alajuela.

  • There are well-maintained trails and observation platforms so you get close to the crater rim in a relatively safe way (when open).

  • It’s a classic “must-see” nature attraction in Costa Rica, combining volcano, forest and dramatic landscape.

Things to See & Do

  • The main crater: Walk up to observation platforms and look into the steaming volcanic crater.

  • The Botos Lagoon (Laguna Botos): A cold crater lake in a secondary crater, framed by forest. Costa Rica+1

  • Short trails through the forest surrounding the volcano: for nature, birds, a change of scenery from the stark crater rim.

  • Nearby coffee plantations / countryside: You can combine your volcano visit with a coffee tour or local farm visit.

  • Scenic drives: The road up winds through high-altitude forest and farms — nice panorama for photos.
